The Canterbury School is a co-educational day school offering a British style education based on the National Curriculum to children between the ages of 2 and 18+. From the age of six onwards pupils receive instruction in Spanish language, literature, history and geography as stipulated by Spanish law which means that at any moment they may transfer to the Spanish system of education if necessary. Pupils are prepared for IGCSE examinations in English, Spanish, French , German, English Literature, Spanish Literature, Mathematics, Coordinate Sciences, which include Biology, Physics and Chemistry, History, Geography, Business Studies, Information Technology and Art. They can also sit “A” levels in most of these subjects. The school is an examination centre for Cambridge, and Edexcel Boards, and the qualifications obtained enable pupils to enter either British or Spanish universities or any other University in English or Spanish speaking countries. The school is divided into four sections, Infants, Primary, Primary Maspalomas, and Secondary each of which has its separate building under its specialist head. Facilities include laboratories, libraries, computer rooms, art rooms, music rooms, dining rooms and extensive playing fields where basket ball, volley ball, hockey, football and tennis are played. Extra curricular activities include out door sports, dance, karate, art, music and computer clubs. The majority of the teachers have qualifications from British Universities but there are a few who come from countries where English is the national language which means that the children experience a wide variety of accents and have first hand knowledge of these different cultures. At Canterbury we try to provide the correct atmosphere for the development of the necessary social and moral values for our pupils to become useful, positive and constructive members of our society. As children spend most of their day in school the atmosphere there is extremely important in the formation of their character and habits. Because of the enormous influence that the individual teacher has on the formation of children’s attitudes our staff are highly qualified and dedicated members of the teaching profession. Much attention is paid to each child as an individual. Each class has its own tutor who is responsible for the social, emotional and academic development of the children in his or her care. Emphasis is placed on communication between parents and teachers to ensure steady progress and correct potential problems before they develop into serious difficulties. Young people leave us at 18 with a positive interested attitude towards learning in general and with skills and qualifications necessary for further study where they will train to accept posts of responsibility within our society.
