NABSS REGIONAL TRAINING 2025 / 2026

Lock it in! Tailor Your Teaching to Make Learning Stick, Belinda Crowhurst

The National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS) will be holding its regional training workshops during October and November 2025.

This year, the sessions will be led by Belinda Crowhurst under the title “Lock it in! Tailor Your Teaching to Make Learning Stick”, focusing on how to promote effective and sustained learning in the classroom.
Workshops will be held in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Málaga, Mallorca and Lanzarote, in this new edition designed to strengthen teaching practice through evidence-based educational strategies.
To facilitate participation from member schools, the workshops will take place across various locations in Spain, with the following dates and venues confirmed:

11th October – Barcelona, Oak House School
18th October – Madrid, International School of Madrid
25th October – Valencia, British School Alzira
8th November – Málaga, The British College of Benalmádena
15th November – Mallorca, Queen’s College
22nd November – Lanzarote, Colegio Hispano Británico Lanzarote

BELINDA CROWHURST

Following her Postgraduate degree in education, Belinda enjoyed a 20-year career in outstanding teaching and leadership, both at school and strategic level.  Having led English across a large multi academy trust, she took her passion for supporting teaching and learning in a new direction, creating her company – Beacon Education Consulting.

As a freelance consultant, Belinda works with schools across England, Wales and Scotland in developing strategic support for school improvement through data analysis and robust diagnosis, supports leadership development through effective coaching and mentoring, works with schools to develop best practice in safeguarding, delivers high quality training in metacognition and memory, curriculum design, all aspects of English, assessment, monitoring, oracy and early language development.  She also lectures postgraduate and undergraduate students at Plymouth Marjon University in her main area of expertise – English. 

She is currently undertaking research towards her Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice as part of her M.Ed.  Her skilful design and delivery of subject specific training, based on evidence informed research, draws on a wide range of career experience and expertise.  Belinda is also an associate consultant for ECM Education, designing bespoke support for individual schools and multi academy trusts as well as delivering online CPD.  She is one of only 5 consultants working with Osiris Educational – a global school improvement company – as a Visible Learning consultant.

Course outcomes

Session 1: Understanding the learning and memory process – Exploring neuromyths, episodic and semantic memory, schema construction and automation.  

Session 2: The importance of managing cognitive load theory.  How can we enhance memory retention and strengthen recall pathways so students can remember more and retrieve information more easily?  

Session 3: Using effective modelling techniques to promote deeper learning – exploring a range of evidence-based teaching methods to engage and stimulate pupils at all stages of the learning journey.

Session 4: Retrieval practice – understanding the best methods for supporting students to retrieve information, make connections between prior learning and new concepts and strengthen neural pathways.  

Session 5: Managing cognitive load through effective presentations – How best to organise information on slides and diagrams to support rapid learning and maximise transfer of information.

Session 6: A teacher’s best friend?  Harnessing AI to develop engaging learning materials and improve the speed and quality of feedback.
